Children's Theatre - Profile

The Tim Bat Trick Show came into being in 1999 when I was approached by The South Bank Art Centre (London) to perform in their programme of Christmas shows in the Purcell Room. This was the first time in my career that I seriously considered devising a show targeted at children. I had always enjoyed performing for a family audience & had a lot of experience on children’s TV. My material and repertoire I knew from experience to be adaptable for children, and playing endlessly with my own little ones at home helped with my understanding of all things silly and childish.

The success of the Purcell Room show was actually an epiphany for me; until then I doubted my ability to hold the attention of children single-handedly for a whole hour-long performance. Also, I hadn’t realised the satisfaction & delight I would experience from entertaining a theatre full of children. I found myself pre-occupied with devising new clowning routines (especially with puppets ‘Mungus Mongo’ the Mongoose & ‘ Lucy the Ickle Woolly Ba Lambkin’), and with finding appropriate outlets for the show.

My first stop was my local theatre The Komedia (Brighton) which booked The Tim Bat Trick Show, to which I invited specialist agent John Field Theatre & Puppetry. He was most encouraging and enthusiastic, and offered (non-exclusive) representation which I happily accepted. John has since booked my show into studio theatres & Art Centres across the South (eg The Mill at Yvonne Arnauld Theatre Guildford, Ustinov Studio Bath, Croydon Warehouse, Library Theatre Luton etc.). The show may also be booked direct.

The Tim Bat Trick Show continues to evolve; over the past few years I have designed stage furniture to enhance the ‘look’ and added new routines and music throughout to appeal to all age groups.
