Shopping Centres - Profile
My first experience of performing within a shopping environment, rather than
outside, came in the mid eighties with an invitation from the proprietors of
Penninn in Reykjavic (Iceland) to perform at the opening of their new department
store. I had great fun roaming around the store and a very warm reception from
the Icelandic people, garnering the requisite media attention to successfully
promote the event.
Soon afterwards I was booked by a major department store in Stockholm for a
British goods promotion, returning twice to the Gallerian Mall
(Stockholm) for ‘Britain is Great’ travel promotions sponsored by the British
Tourist Authority. I also returned to Iceland for similar promotions at Kringlan
Mall, both for the BTA and Department of Trade and Industry.
Throughout the nineties, bookings at shopping centres in the UK and Europe were
a regular feature of my work, together with occasional department store
promotions (eg Fenwicks, House of Fraser) and frequent appearances in Germany at
European Markets (Kiel, Hamburg, Hanover).
Regular performances during the opening weeks of Bluewater Mall (Kent) provided
the opportunity to focus intensively on this particular style of working; my
original ‘walkabout’ technique benefiting greatly from the experience and
prompting me to seek further work in this sector.
Since 2000 I have been in great demand at shopping centres throughout the south
of England, booking direct or through reputable PR companies and agencies.
Experience has taught me how best to perform in the shopping centre environment
and, considering the seasonal nature of the work in the UK, I have customised my
performances accordingly: A Funny Man for all Seasons.
